Transliteration: Bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

Transliteration: Noon waalqalami wama yasturoona
Nun. By the Pen and by that which the writers are writing,

Transliteration: Ma anta biniAAmati rabbika bimajnoonin
you are not, by the grace of your Lord, mad.

Transliteration: Wainna laka laajran ghayra mamnoonin
And surely you have a reward that shall never end,

Transliteration: Wainnaka laAAala khuluqin AAatheemin
and surely you are exalted to a high and noble character.

Transliteration: Fasatubsiru wayubsiroona
Soon you shall see as well as they,

Transliteration: Biayyikumu almaftoonu
which of you is afflicted with madness.

Transliteration: Inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu biman dalla AAan sabeelihi wahuwa aAAlamu bialmuhtadeena
Your Lord best knows those who have strayed from His Way and He best knows also those who are rightly guided.

Transliteration: Fala tutiAAi almukaththibeena
Therefore, do not at all yield to the beliers of the Truth.

Transliteration: Waddoo law tudhinu fayudhinoona
They indeed wish that you should compromise a little, then they also would compromise.

Transliteration: Wala tutiAA kulla hallafin maheenin
Do not at all yield to any mean swearer of many oaths,

Transliteration: Hammazin mashshain binameemin
who is a slanderer and a backbiter,

Transliteration: MannaAAin lilkhayri muAAtadin atheemin
a hinderer of good and a transgressor, wicked

Transliteration: AAutullin baAAda thalika zaneemin
and oppressive, and above all, ignoble by birth

Transliteration: An kana tha malin wabaneena
only because he has abundance of wealth and children.

Transliteration: Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru alawwaleena
When Our Revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are tales of the ancient times."

Transliteration: Sanasimuhu AAala alkhurtoomi
Soon We shall brand him on the snout.

Transliteration: Inna balawnahum kama balawna ashaba aljannati ith aqsamoo layasrimunnaha musbiheena
We have tried them (the people of Makkah) just as we had tried the owners of a certain garden, when they swore that they would surely pluck the fruit of their garden next morning,

Transliteration: Wala yastathnoona
and they did not make any exception.

Transliteration: Fatafa AAalayha taifun min rabbika wahum naimoona
But while they lay asleep at night, a calamity from your Lord visited the garden

Transliteration: Faasbahat kaalssareemi
and it became as though it had already been reaped.

Transliteration: Fatanadaw musbiheena
In the morning they called out to one another, saying: "

Transliteration: Ani ighdoo AAala harthikum in kuntum sarimeena
Go forth early to your tilth if you would pluck fruit."

Transliteration: Faintalaqoo wahum yatakhafatoona
So they set out, whispering to one another, "

Transliteration: An la yadkhulannaha alyawma AAalaykum miskeenun
Let no needy man approach you in the garden today."

Transliteration: Waghadaw AAala hardin qadireena
They hurried off early (to their garden) with the resolve not to give away anything as though they had the power (to pluck the fruit).

Transliteration: Falamma raawha qaloo inna ladalloona
But when they saw the garden, they said, "We have lost our way!

Transliteration: Bal nahnu mahroomoona
Nay, but we have been left destitute!"

Transliteration: Qala awsatuhum alam aqul lakum lawla tusabbihoona
The best man among them said, "Did I not tell you, `Why do you not glorify (Allah)'?"

Transliteration: Qaloo subhana rabbina inna kunna thalimeena
They cried out, "Glorified is our Lord: we were indeed sinners!"

Transliteration: Faaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatalawamoona
Then they began to blame one another.

Transliteration: Qaloo ya waylana inna kunna tagheena
At last, they said, "Alas for us! Indeed we had become rebellious.

Transliteration: AAasa rabbuna an yubdilana khayran minha inna ila rabbina raghiboona
It may well be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better garden than this. We turn to our Lord."

Transliteration: Kathalika alAAathabu walaAAathabu alakhirati akbaru law kanoo yaAAlamoona
Such is the torment, and the torment of the Hereafter is far greater. Would that they knew this!
